March 2012

International Women's Day (8 March)
Primary History School Topic - Emmeline PankhurstInternational Women's Day (8 March) honours the work of the Suffragettes, celebrates women's success. Emmeline Pankhurst (1858 - 1928) was the British suffrage leader who led the movement to win the vote for women in Britain. With the History Focus Week resource for Famous People, contains assembly plans, ideas for trips out and letters to parents for sessions that includes Emmeline Pankhurst covering early years to KS2.

 

National Science & Engineering Week (8 - 18 March) Science and Engineering Week - Everybody is talking about the sciences and engineering.  This March has the UK’s widest celebration. Enthuse, your class on the wonders of science and engineering with any of the Science Topics covering Early Years through to KS2.

Commonwealth Day (12 March)
Commonwealth Day is the annual celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations (formerly known as the British Commonwealth) held on the second Monday in March. The Queen delivers an address to the 54 independent member states and this is also broadcast throughout the world. Years 5 and 6 pupils can learn how life has changed in Britain since the 1948 through our KS2 History resource files.


Albert Einstein – (born 14 March)
German born, Albert Einstein (14 March 1879 – 18 April 1955) is well known as the discoverer of the theory of relativity. Because of this, Einstein is often regarded as the father of modern physics and he received the Noble Prize for Physics 1921 for his services to theoretical physics. Karascope’s Primary Science KS2 5/6 Unit 6E: Forces in Actions will help bring to life in the classroom with its cross-curricular approach.

Mothering Sunday (18 March)
Mother’s Day is a special day for honoring Mothers throughout the world and holds great significance for all of us. Its origins go back to the ancient Greeks who celebrated a festival to Cybele a great mother of Greek gods. In modern Europe, Mother’s day is part of several Christian denomination calendars (including Anglicans and Catholics) and is observed on the 4th Sunday in Lent in honour of the Virgin Mary. Younger children can learn about Mothering Sunday and other exciting topics through Karascope’s Early Years RE Lesson Plans Unit 4 – Our beautiful World.

International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (21 March)
The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed with a series of events and activities worldwide on March 21 each year. Encourage pupils to remember their obligations, find ways to fight racism, and promote tolerance in their lives and communities with our KS2 RE Resource files on Race and Diversity.

World Poetry Day (21 March)
World Poetry day is designed to promote the reading, writing, publishing and teaching of poetry throughout the world. Inspire your class, get them enthused.  Karascope has poetry units for each year group.

British Summer Time - BST (25 March)
At 1.00am (01:00) GMT on the last Sunday in March we move our clocks forward by one hour for the start of British Summer Time. We've been changing our clocks forwards and backwards in the UK since 1916. It's all to do with saving the hours of daylight, and was started by a man called William Willett. Younger children can find out how this effects plants through LCP’s KS1 Science Resource Files which offer a cross-curricular approach to primary science by providing lesson plans and activity sheets that overlap other subject areas.
