World Wetlands DayWorld Wetlands Day (2 February)
World Wetlands Day was first celebrated in 1997. Since then government agencies, non-government organisations and community groups have celebrated World Wetlands Day by raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits and by promoting the conservation and use of wetlands. The theme for this year is Wetlands and Forests and has been chosen because 2011 is the UN International Year of Forests.

 

The Beatles record their first album in one day (11 February)
The Beatles, also known as the fab four, formed in Liverpool in 1960 and went on to become one of the world’s most famous bands. Learn more about the Beatles and in particular John Lennon, through Karascope’s History of recent famous people, covering topics such as; the Beatles remembered, reactions to the death of John Lennon, John Lennon's impact on history and more.


St Valentine’s Day, giving chocolate (14 February)
Chocolate is synonymous with St Valentine’s Day and chocolate is a great way to capture children’s imaginations. What better way to engage KS2 pupils with the history of the Aztecs where chocolate originated. Karascope’s History Resource, Who are the Aztecs?, starts off with an introduction to Mexico with a chocolate based activity, then moves on to cover the Aztec civilisation, their beliefs, everyday Aztec life and much more.

 

Pancake Day (21 February) :  Check out our Primary School Assemblies - for Pancake Day.  A resource jam packed with ideas and suggestions for an inspired assembly.  Including a prayer, a thought, as well as  suggestions for music, songs, activity plus ideas for cross curicular links such as PHSE ... and what's more its only £5 !! 

Mardi Gras (21 February)
Whilst in the UK, Shrove Tuesday is celebrated as Pancake Day the popular celebratory aspect of the day historically was associated with releasing high spirits before the sombre season of Lent. The traditional Mardi Gras or carnival season, begins around Epiphany and ends on Shrove Tuesday. Many countries celebrate Shrove Tuesday differently. Inspire Year 4 children to learn more about other cultures and traditions with the 4C Carnival Resource, covering up to 6 weeks worth of resources.

  

Fairtrade Fortnight (27 February - 11 March 2012)
Tell everyone you know about the difference Fairtrade makes to the lives of farmers who grow the products we enjoy in the UK.

Take a look at RE Resource File – Unit 4, Justice for Year 5 pupils. Here you’ll find ready to use lesson plans and activities that include Fairtrade. What’s more with Karascope, only purchase the Justice unit - if that’s all you need!
